How does a bail bond work? A judge sets a bail amount. If the family cannot pay it in cash, a licensed bail bond company posts the full amount with the court for a fee — normally 10% to 15% of the bail in Alabama — and the defendant goes home while the case continues.

Bail and bond are not the same thing. Bail is the amount the court sets. The bond is the guarantee posted to satisfy it. People use the words interchangeably; the courts do not.

Alabama judges set bail case by case, with no published price list. They weigh the charge, prior record, ties to the community, and steady work — which is why two people arrested the same night can face very different numbers.
