Getting out of jail is not the end of the case. It is the start of a court process with deadlines and conditions, and breaking one can put a person straight back in custody.

Alabama sorts charges into classes — misdemeanors A through C, felonies A through D — and the class drives both the possible sentence and the size of the bond. The court also attaches conditions of release: appear at every hearing, stay in the jurisdiction, no new arrests.

Each county adds its own rules. A Shelby County property bond secured by real estate in another county must be approved by that county’s sheriff first, and Shelby purge bonds take only a money order or cashier’s check. Federal charges run through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
