Outstanding Warrant in Alabama? How a Walk-Through Bond Works

A walk-through bond — also called a turn-in bond — is arranged before you go in, so you are booked, processed, and released in the same visit instead of sitting in jail waiting for someone to bail you out.

The bond costs the same either way. The difference is entirely in the timing, and the timing is what costs people their jobs.

How it works, step by step

Step 1 — We confirm the warrant. Before anything else, we verify what is actually out there and which court holds it. Checking costs you nothing, and having us check keeps you in control instead of announcing yourself to the agency holding it.

Step 2 — We arrange the bond in advance. This is the whole trick. The bond is prepared and ready before you set foot in the building, so there is no gap between being booked and being released. Without it, booking ends and the waiting begins.

Step 3 — We schedule the turn-in. Weekday mornings, when the court and the jail are both fully staffed, are best. Late Friday is the worst possible time.

Where you go, county by county

Jefferson County has two jails. The Birmingham facility (switchboard 205-325-5670) and the Bessemer jail at 1822 2nd Avenue North (205-481-4160), which serves the Bessemer Cutoff and western Jefferson County. Going to the wrong one wastes a morning. We confirm which before you leave the house.

Shelby County — Shelby County Jail, 380 McDow Road, Columbiana. Jail Division 205-670-6066. Note that Shelby purge bonds are only accepted as a money order or cashier’s check — not cash, not a card. If a purge bond is involved, get to the bank first.

St. Clair County — the jail is at 100 18th St. North, Pell City (205-814-3525), lobby open 24 hours. But bonds are posted at the Sheriff’s Office, not the jail: Ashville, 48 6th St. or Pell City, 1610 Cogswell Ave. And the rule that costs families a whole day: all felony bonds in St. Clair County require two property owners. One signer is enough for a misdemeanor if there is only one property owner.

Why waiting is the expensive option

An Alabama warrant does not expire. It sits until something triggers it — a traffic stop, a background check for a job or an apartment, or a coordinated sweep.

The sweeps are real, scheduled, and publicized. Operation Safe Summer — Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office with the Birmingham Police Department and the FBI — announced on July 3, 2026 that it had cleared 193 outstanding warrants, made 76 arrests, and conducted 150 traffic stops. Operation Alliance Shield added 53 arrests.

Clear it on your schedule, or have it cleared on theirs. Those are the only two options, and only one of them lets you keep your job.

What it costs

A walk-through bond is priced like any Alabama bail bond: normally 10% to 15% of the bail amount, paid up front and non-refundable.

Creative financing is available upon approval, at 0% interest if paid in full within 12 months. Approval depends on a co-signer assessment — nobody can promise guaranteed approval or guaranteed release.

Because you have time before a scheduled turn-in, this is the one bail situation where you can plan the money instead of scrambling for it at 2 a.m. Use that.

When a walk-through will not work

We would rather tell you now than take your money.

If bail has been denied, there is nothing to post. Under Aniah’s Law, expanded by the amendment Alabama voters passed on May 19, 2026, judges may deny bail outright for certain offenses.

If the warrant is a probation violation, it is frequently held without bond pending a hearing. Talk to an attorney first.

If there is a hold from another county, another state, or a federal agency, clearing the local warrant does not clear the hold.
